Polonaise carpets originated in esteemed workshops in Isfahan (central Persia), during the 17^th century. They were often commissioned by European nobility, who considered them to be a tour-de-force of style and composition. Designs from this period have been aesthetically re-drawn and reinterpreted by workshops in the major rug producing countries, with an emphasis on participating in and transitioning to the modernist era that we find ourselves in. This piece is a stunning example – with its various shades of indigo – that reveal a weaver’s sense of style and discovery.
